Where to Take Your Surfboard and Wet Suit This Year

As any surfing enthusiast will know, there are hundreds of amazing coves, beaches and bays where the surf is excellent. However, where is one of the hotspots in 2011 likely to be?

Well surfing in Morocco and, along its northern coast near Essaouira, has long enjoyed a reputation as being an up-and-coming area for excellent surfing. Furthermore, it promises the complete package with small cafes, shops and bars oozing surfer style chic and character. So what is making surfing in Essaouira so popular and a possible hot spot for 2011?

Amazing Surf and Amazing Choice

First we have to talk about the surf. With access to six beaches along the north, there is an abundance of choice for visitors. Experienced surfers looking for a thrill will find Sidi Kaouki and La Grotte popular places. La Grotte (The Cave) is a particularly notorious spot for producing strong, high waves, aided by consistent winds.

Even when some of the other areas have shut, you will find tall waves continuing to pound the shore. This means you are near-guaranteed to be able to hit the waves, whatever time of year.
There are also bays and beaches ideal for beginners. The Bay is particularly popular and often populated by intermediate surfers in Morocco.

More Than Just Hitting the Waves

Surfing in Morocco is more than just about hitting the waves; it is also about absorbing the culture of the watersport. There is a real sense of this found in and around Essaouira. As aforementioned, there are plenty of cafes and shops dedicated to the surfing vibe.

Everything is relaxed and laid back, the ideal wind down after the adrenaline of riding the crest of a wave. The shops, many of which provide equipment, also aid this culture. As do the schools where beginners and new comers can learn about surfing or improve their ability. However, this is no substitute for getting out there and trying it out.
With all of this on offer, it isn't hard to see why surfing in Morocco is considered a hot spot for 2011.
