If you travel often, invest in small reusable plastic bottles. You can find reusable bottles at most large supermarkets. Putting your regular shampoos and conditioners in these small, reusable bottles is more cost efficient in the long run. Travel sized toiletries are often very overpriced for the small amount of product inside them.

Try to eat something very mild during the meal prior to your plane ride. You don't want to feel nauseous or have to use the bathroom numerous times during the flight. A piece of toast for breakfast or a cup of soup for lunch would be a great option.

Traveling by bus is an economical alternative to flying, but you should be aware of luggage requirements before packing for your trip. Find out the weight and size limits of luggage imposed by your chosen bus company, in addition to the number of bags you can take. If you are bringing skis, snowboards or other bulky equipment, make sure you comply with the company's policies. Be prepared to move your own luggage if transferring buses, as most bus companies do not provide this service.

When traveling by air, you need to plan ahead. It can take much more time then expected to get to airports in major cities because of traffic. You should have your suitcase packed the day before you leave, so on the day of your trip you are totally ready to go. To reduce your pre-flight anxiety, prepare for your trip well in advance. Not making your flight will cost you time and money.

Having an emergency road kit can save your vacation. If you plan on traveling to your vacation destination by car, it is crucial to be prepared in case of emergency. At a minimum road kit should contain first-aid supplies, road flares, water, jumper cables and a flashlight. Having one on hand can make dealing with small problems a snap, and could potentially save your life in a serious accident.

If you are traveling in a car, bring a roadside geology book with you. They have a variety of maps, mileage logs and geologic primers that will make your trip a little more interesting. They also contain beautiful collections of photographs that will make the scenery around you come to life.

If you take prescription medications, plan for your vacations. Carry enough of your medications with you to cover your entire trip plus an additional week. You will most likely not be able to fill prescriptions while traveling, plus you want to be covered if you are delayed at any point during your trip.

That dream you have always had of bathing in a waterfall on a tropical setting or fishing for salmon in an Alaskan stream can be fulfilled. Travel is about creating your own destiny, and it can give you a sense of purpose in your life. It can give you something to look forward to and plan for during your slower times. Travel can give you memories that will bring smiles and warmth to your life for years to come. Don't wait! Start traveling now!
