Enjoy The Best Of Florida With Key West Fishing Charters

By Jerri Perry

The perfect holiday destination is one with great weather, stunning beaches, a good nightlife and plenty of things to do. It's even better when you don't have to travel halfway around the world to get there but can simply drive down. The Florida Keys is one of those destinations and Key West fishing charters will ensure that you have the action-packed holiday of a lifetime.

Probably Florida's most famous island is Key West, home to the city of the same name. It's one of America's favorite places to escape to during the cold winter months and even President Harry S Truman had a winter home here. Many famous people are associated with the island but the one that usually comes to mind first is the man who was not only a renowned author but also a fisherman of note, Ernest Hemingway. It was in fact here that Hemingway developed his passion for fishing.

Trying to catch big game fish like Hemingway did is still one of the most popular activities in the Florida Keys. To snag the big ones, however, you need to go beyond the shallow waters of the reefs. In the deep waters further out you'll find tuna, sailfish and marlin. You may also catch what the locals call dolphin fish but what is usually known as mahi-mahi.

While the deep sea is for the big guns, you might also want to try angling with light tackle. For this, there are smaller boats that are more suited to the shallower waters around the reefs. Spring is tarpon season but other species that are found in these waters include snapper, groupon and sharks. Since the reefs are teeming with marine life and there are interesting shipwrecks here too, it's a good idea to bring your snorkeling gear too but some boats provide this as part of the package.

There are some areas closer to shore where the water is very shallow. Even here you'll be able to find plenty of fish. Take a flats skiff and try to hook the Key West Grand Slam of bonefish, tarpon and permit in one day. Barracuda love these waters too.

A great option if you can't afford to charter a boat of your own is to go on a trip on a party boat. You share the vessel with twenty to fifty others so if you want a quiet day out on the waters, this is probably not the best option for you. However, it's a good way to meet new people and because it's not all about the fish, the whole family will enjoy it.

One of the factors that make Key West such a popular destination is that there is warm weather throughout the year. Morning showers may occur from May to October and there is a risk of hurricanes. However, it's also low season so the city of Key West will be less crowded and accommodation will be cheaper and easier to find.

To find Key West fishing charters, simply walk down to the waterfront of the main streets of the city while you're in Florida. There are numerous companies that offer their services. Otherwise, look online and book ahead.
