By Essie Osborn

Haida Gwaii is an archipelago located in the north of British Columbia, and is considered as the region's best kept secret when it comes to recreation, relaxation, fun and adventure. A mere stone's throw away from the city of Vancouver, a short two hour flight, will see you land on these beautiful islands. No wonder many have taken advantage of Haida Gwaii adventure tours and travel packages that are available today.

The islands are the home of the Haida people, who also make parts of Alaska their home. First known as the Queen Charlotte Islands as named by it first surveyor Captain Dixon, it has since been renamed as Haida Gwaii, or islands of the Haida.

The island can boast of one thing, and that is it can cater to anyone. It has plenty of enough activities and sights for anyone of whatever age to enjoy. Whether one wants to go more for historical or cultural enrichment, water or land adventure activities, there will be something to be definitely enjoyed and remembered. Most would want to do a lot of hiking as is one of the most popular activities, but one should be aware that many types of transportation may be needed if one wants a complete tour of the area. One would need bikes and kayaks on one's journey through the entire archipelago.

Those who want to absorb and experience the local cultural heritage will need about four days to do so. This is about the right amount of time if one wants to visit each and every one of the communities and go through the local art stores, museums and craft shops. It is also of note to visit the many totem poles erected by the various families to highlight their own histories.

Those who want a bit of a water adventure should not miss whale watching, as the islands are in the most strategic spot in the whole world to watch orcas, grey whales and humpback whales up close. March to April are the best times to watch gray whales while May to September are best times to watch killer whales or orcas. Many outfits provide year round tours for whale watching in the area.

Those who prefer a land adventure would be pleased to know that there are quite a lot of hiking trails available as well as guided tours. One of these guided tours is quite unique in that it provides a tree climbing experience. Most people at the end of a long hike enjoy the serenity of the surrounding beaches to chill out and yet others take to biking and exploring the island on mountain bikes.

For those who do not want to much strenuous activities, there are plenty of spaces to lounge around in. There are also great fishing spots to be had along areas with great kayaking also. There is always something for anyone to do to make the trip worthwhile.
