Fun Things To Do In California

By Shawn Hunter

There are many reasons why California is the place almost everyone would like to visit at least once. There are so many fun things to do in California that trying to prioritize is the main problem. 'Fun' comes outdoors and in, in the country and in the city, on a beach or a mountain, under an impossibly tall sequoia or at an unbeatable amusement park, by a turquoise pool or on a tilting raft in a Class V rapid. The most populous state - and the third largest in size - is thought by many to be an earthly paradise.

Places that are familiar all over the world are Hollywood, Los Angeles, Malibu, the Golden Gate Bridge, and, of course, Disneyland. For shopping, what compares with Rodeo Drive? The surfing culture is alive and well on more than 1,000 miles of beach. See wine up close and personal in Napa Valley, eat strawberry pizza at Oxnard, and enjoy sublime seafood on Fisherman's Wharf.

Outdoor fun could mean Class III whitewater on the Kings River near Sequoia National Park, where the giant redwoods grow to 350 feet. Real challenges are the Class V rapids of several rivers, including the Salmon, the Scott, and the Illinois. Beginners can see what the excitement is about and expert rafters can find the ultimate thrill.

The infinite variety of California includes the nation's highest point at the top of Mt. Whitney and its lowest in Death Valley. Hikers could spend a lifetime and not see all the natural wonders. There are marshes with rare birds, forests with towering sequoias, the wilderness of Yosemite with almost every animal you can imagine, and world-class surf off Oxnard and many other beach cities. Even the sunsets are unforgettable seen from a Pacific coast clifftop.

The cities draw as many people as the great outdoors. Breathtaking architecture awaits in hilly San Franciso, which many consider the most beautiful city in the world. This fabulous city is home to the Golden Gate Bridge, one of California's top ten tourist attractions.

People take tours in Palm Springs to see the homes of the rich and famous. They stroll in areas where the stars are known to shop, dine, and play, in hopes of catching a glimpse of a leading actor or actress. There is Los Angeles' Walk of Fame, where bronze stars are awarded to people outstanding in their field. The giant white letters on the side of Mount Lee make sure no one misses out on Hollywood. Movie studio tours are always popular.

The Golden State's largest industry is neither tourism nor movie making. It's agriculture. Especially in the northern part of the state, there are endless citrus groves, vegetable fields, orchards, and vineyards. This region has a very different feel from the south, which is more arid.

The state is full of history. Visit a mission or one of the venerable municipal buildings on the National Historic Register. Relax at a five-star resort, find rare birds along the marshy coastline, eat fresh seafood, pick an avocado off a tree. No matter what makes a vacation special, you'll find it in sunny California.
